Exam Glove Sizing Guide: Fit, Material, and Use Cases

Why fit matters

An ill-fitting glove is more than uncomfortable — it's a safety risk. Loose gloves bunch and tear; tight gloves cause hand fatigue, reduce dexterity, and lead to faster perforation.

Quick fit test: with the glove on, you should be able to make a fist comfortably and feel a fingertip pinch when picking up a small object. If the fingers extend beyond your fingertips, size down.

Sizing chart

Measure across your dominant palm just below the knuckles. XS: <3 in. S: 3.0–3.5 in. M: 3.5–4.0 in. L: 4.0–4.5 in. XL: 4.5–5.0 in. XXL: >5.0 in.

Material guide

Nitrile: gold standard for healthcare. Latex-free, puncture-resistant, suitable for chemotherapy and chemical handling. The default choice for nearly every medical and dental setting.

Latex: superior tactile sensitivity. Reserved for select surgical applications where allergies are screened.

Vinyl: lowest cost, lowest barrier protection. Suitable only for short, low-risk tasks (e.g., food prep, light housekeeping).

Thickness recommendations

Standard exam: 3.0–4.0 mil. Heavy-duty / chemo: 5.0–8.0 mil. Surgical: separate sterile category — order by Brown & Sharpe gauge.
